The night is dark with a deep blue sky
And look closer a mountain silhouette so high
Look down at the road from the 18th storey
And patches of habitation called slums look so gory
I wonder and wander in my mind
Compassion is dead and senses left behind
There came a band of people with guile
Workmen to clean the city of this vile
I remember the street corner blazing in fire
Somebody had attempted to fulfil their desire
Clean Mumbai and clean of poverty and strife
Did he confide he murdered children and wives
A friend just mentioned of the stark contrast
Two sides of a city one bright one dark
I justified Mumbai is for all
A city that lets even serpents crawl
Little by little and piece by piece
A few days of showers torment with a hiss
Government called us a resilient lot
And leant nothing from deaths and pain the rains brought
It is another year and the people are running
8.15, 9.25, 10.30 are the trains they are gunning
Guns remind of the blast in these trains
News channels discovered the city in bloodstains
So much did happen in the times gone by
People shed their responsibilities and so did I
Government blamed the funds and finances
People befuddled thought of other nuances
A plastic bag we would trash on the streets
And blame the government imagine the grit
I for one have promised to change
To do things differently and then gauge
Another day and another life one may not see
Or change their lives to utopia in a wee
It is not the constellation and their mutiny
But for us to change our own destiny
